KIND OF SUMMER is a photography-based brand that explores nature as an active presence. Founded by artist Sunha Hwang, the brand began with the long-term series Nature Portraits and has expanded into scents, notebooks, and objects that offer sensory rituals and moments of self-care. Each work captures unposed, quiet scenes in nature—inviting reflection, pause, and emotional stillness. Photography is not only the origin but the core of the brand. Through exhibitions, art books, perfumes, and workshops, KIND OF SUMMER creates spaces for subtle transformation and connection.

Publication/Work:
KIND OF SUMMER is a photography-based artist brand that explores nature as an active subject. Since 2017, the project has developed through self-published works that combine observation, presence, and quiet ritual. For KLABF 2025, we plan to present the following:
FLORESTA
This book collects forest photographs taken between 2017–2019, capturing quiet moments where nature reveals itself with presence. The publication consists of two parts: an accordion-fold section and a hand-bound 3-hole section. FLORESTA was independently published in multiple editions and will be re-released in 2025 with an ISBN and renewed cover design. The series also led to the development of KIND OF SUMMER’s first signature scent, which translates the visual experience into smell. Printed scent cards and visual ephemera related to FLORESTA will also be presented.
Nature Portrait
This book is based on the concept of “Nature as Portrait.” It documents unposed moments where plants, stones, and light take on a presence, as if meeting the viewer’s gaze in a crowd. Since 2022, the work has been published in small hand-bound editions and is scheduled for official ISBN release in 2025.
WICKED SHUTTER in Tokyo
A series of 36 film frames captured with a secondhand camera used for over a decade, with one shutter blade permanently stuck. The resulting images are partially covered and unintentionally fragmented. What began as a technical flaw became a method of documenting chance. Originally published in 2017 and reissued in 2024 and 2025.
Abandoned or Left Behind
A field observation journal of quiet encounters—small, overlooked things found during walks. What may appear as trash to others becomes a trace worth recording. The book will be officially released at Unlimited Edition in 2025.
FLORESTA (Signature scent by KIND OF SUMMER)
– Inspired by the forest photography series, presented as printed scent cards or simple object-based displays.
Hand-bound notebooks
– Over 3,000 copies have been manually stitched and produced by the artist since 2017.
These notebooks are sold exclusively at offline fairs and events.
Single postcards
– A loose postcard series featuring images from the Nature Portrait series (12 designs as of 2025).
